Nervous About New York City

New York CityThere I said it. Right there in the title. I’m nervous about going to New York City. I’ve never been and I’m leaving to go to BlogHer 12 on Thursday.

I’ll be in New York City for my first time ever all by myself. I know there will be 4,000 other bloggers and millions of New Yorkers there with me, but it does make me a bit nervous to think about getting off the plane at La Guardia and getting to the hotel and then maneuvering my way through the conference to the various parties throughout the city.

I consider myself a seasoned traveler. I’ve done quite a lot of traveling on my own in the past couple of years and everything always works out fine. But New York City is big!  I’ll be happy to have my phone with GPS and I’m printing out all of the addresses of every where I have to be just in case.

I do have to say that I’m also very excited to finally visit NYC. My parents went a few years ago and have just raved about it ever since.  So I’m thrilled to see what the appeal is and to get caught up in the excitement.

I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures and share them once I return. It will definitely be an exciting and adventurous trip and I’m sure once I get there my nerves will disappear.

What about you? Have you ever been to New York City? If so do you have any tips, tricks, suggestions, ideas, or advice for me? I’m all ears!

As a New Yorker I am always suprised how people make a big deal about heading into the city. For me it was just a train ride and something I grew up doing. It was a 40 minute drive and its interesting how now I dislike driving anywhere in South Florida over 40 minutes because I feel it takes me nowhere special. Before, you could be in NYC, but now..I could care less about South Street or Miami.

My only advice: don’t fret! Maybe my Mom was a bit laissez-faire, but when she took as kids (pre-teens) she pretty much let us roam Manhattan on our own, as long as we were in pairs and did not take the subway or a cab (ie walking only). We were just fine and had a blast! Granted we were responsible kids, but boy we loved that trip. Take a tour of Central Park!

  3. Rich Hicks says:

we were there about 5 years ago for first time and loved it. So much to see and do. Want to go back soon. Hope you had a great time

  4. I would love to go to NYC someday!

  5. Been there several times, once all by myself. Don’t use the subway late at night.

  6. I have never been to NYC, but someday I would love to go.

  7. Trasina McGahey says:

Looking at that picture I feel overwhelmed and I didn’t even go! I would LOVE to go to NYC though. Maybe someday!

  8. Jennifer Marie says:

wow those pictures make ME nervous!! Glad I do not live in a big city!

  9. I have never been to New York City! …but I have been to Europe, Tahiti…how weird is that!

I’ve never been to NYC yet either, I would like to and be excited to go BUT I would be really nervous at the same time, much like it sounds like you were. My husband went before he knew me and had a great time so it would be a comfort to bring someone who’s previously been I think. If I ever get to go of my 5 young adult kids I would wish to bring my teen son Elijah and my 20 yr old daughter Michae’la bc those two have visiting NYC high on their bucket lists even higher than I do!

  11. i love nyc so many things to do! its an awesome place to go!

  12. You’ll love it!

  13. Thomas Murphy says:

I have never been to NYC but would love to go

  14. Oh wow… the only time I was ever in NYC was when I was under a year old. Totally jealous! But I would be a little scared too…

  15. Christy Maurer says:

I have been to New York on a one day shopping trip. I loved it. I would live there if I had a million dollars to spend on a 1000 sq ft apartment! You just need to go with the flow. People don’t bother you at all….ok well they do want you to buy knock-off purses on every corner. Just ignore them or tell them you don’t support slave labor :)

  16. I bet you had a good time though!! Judging from the feed #BlogHer12 was a great time.. how nervous are you now about returning to NYC if you had to?

  17. How exciting! Would love to see New York!

  18. Kim Henrichs says:

My advice is to just be smart about your surroundings. Worked there for years and learned to just blend in with the locals. :) ENJOY!!

  19. I can’t wait to see your photos. What a blast!

  20. Enjoy! I’m there everyday.

  21. heather hayes panjon says:

  22. kelley wood says:

im so jealous! I have always wanted to go to NY! I want to visit Central Park and see everyone enjoying life!

  23. I’ve visited NYC a few years ago as part of a sweepstakes I won. My sister, who has been to NYC a few times, was my guest and that made all the difference in the world. I’ve been to several big cities but there’s nowhere else quite like NYC – so big, so diverse, kind of overwhelming, but so much fun! I hope you have a great time!

  24. Calshondra Williams says:

I have never been to New York. But, I would love to visit. There is a lot of stuff happening at once.

  25. I’ve been once back in college but I was with a big group. I would probably be intimidated too. I’m sure you will do fine and enjoy every minute, well, maybe not every minutes (I hate airports!). Have fun!

  26. i can’t wait to read about your trip when you get back! i love nyc;)

  27. Betty Baez says:

awesome! i love going to the city, make sure you get a yummy slice of pizza and i always get a kick out of the espn zone

  28. I would love to go there!

  29. I have never been there and I would be nervous also. I am sure you will have a great time. I look forward to hearing about your trip.

  30. Mary Happymommy says:

I’m a Jersey girl and even I would get nervous going into the city, just because there’s so much hustle and bustle. I imagine the rest of the country watches shows like Seinfeld and Friends and has somewhat of a sanitized view of New York City. When I think of NYC, I think of a particular smell (sorry…the smell of garbage). I like the city in very small doses. But then again I’m not a city person.

My favorite areas in NYC are Southstreet Seaport, Greenwich Village, Central Park, and Rockefeller Center (at Christmastime…to see the tree).

    Stay safe and enjoy!

  31. Becky G. says:

I have never been to NY… let alone knew there were conventions for bloggers… how neat! I look forward to hearing about your adventure.

If you have time… tryto go see Livewith Kelly. From what I hear on Twitter, she is just as nice as she is on tv. :)

Enjoy & most of all… stay SAFE! ;)

  32. Stephanie says:

    i love new york city

  33. heather hayes panjon says:

Enjoy your trip, I’ve never been to nyc looking forward to your thoughts and opinions !:)

  34. I have been to NYC and my tip is not to be overwhelmed and go see a Broadway show! If you’re staying near Broadway, you should try to get rush tickets the morning of the show. I scored a pair of front row seats to Mamma Mia a few years ago for just $30 each!

  35. I have never been and would love to go!

  36. I was just there for a girls weekend. NYC is really easy to get around. As long as you study a map to learn the numbering system then spend a little time to orient yourself once you get there, you’ll have no problem. Have fun!

  37. LAMusing says:

It’s an exciting city! Try to catch a Broadway show if you can. And The Cloisters is a wonderful respite from the chaos.
