First Time In Times Square

Last year I went to New York City for a blogging conference. I had never been to NYC and I had always wanted to go so I was very excited.

I went alone and didn’t plan on doing any sightseeing because I’ve heard about how big and confusing New York can be and didn’t want to take any chances getting lost or missing any of the conference activities. As a result, I did not plan any tourist type excursions for myself and figured I would simply spend most of my time in the hotel or at the conference. I was still happy to be in the big city regardless and was thrilled with the bustling view outside my hotel room window.

However, my first day in I found myself with a few extra hours. I decided it wouldn’t hurt to take a walk. I had my smartphone and GPS and decided to just walk down the street to see what I could see. I stayed at the Sheraton New York on 7th Avenue which was a very busy area. I thought I just might see something of interest so made sure to grab my camera on the way out.

Sheraton New YorkI wandered down the street and saw lots of buildings, cars, and people. The atmosphere had an electric and exciting feel to it and I was glad I took this little walk just to see what I could see.

NYCAs I kept walking I started seeing something in the distance that looked intriguing. The billboards seemed taller, more brightly lit, and the number of people and cabs multiplied immensely.

New York CabsIt was at that moment that I realized I was walking right toward Times Square! I couldn’t believe it. I fancy myself the ultimate travel planner and not knowing that I could walk to Times Square from my hotel had me stunned.

I got over it quickly checked the time and kept walking. It was only a minute or two more and I was there. In Times Square! I had my camera and phone with me and started snapping away. I couldn’t stop smiling, it was incredible!

New York City Times Square

New York City Toy StoryThese are just a fraction of the pictures I took. Once I was in Times Square everyone was taking photos and was just as enthralled as I was. It was wonderful to be there in such a historic, yet modern & bright place.

I was amazed to see that the middle of Times Square is actually blocked off from traffic. It’s an enormous area that is so fun to stand in the middle of in awe. I can’t wait to return one day and to bring my family. I think they’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

I was lucky enough to have one conference event where I walked through Times Square at night. It’s difficult to say whether I like it better during the day or night. It really is brilliant and breathtaking either way.
Times Square at NightOn my journey to Times Square I also was surprised to see a number of costume characters. I saw the Smurfs, Woody from Toy Story, and even Tinkerbell. It seemed an odd place to find them but people were excitedly taking pictures with each one. I also saw a person painted in silver face paint with silver sparkly clothes who was standing on a box moving like a robot. It was really pretty impressive but I’ll save all those photos and conversation for another post!

What about you? Have you ever been to Times Square or would you like to go one day?

  41. Jesselyn A/Jesstinger says:

As a Chicagoan (grew up there and live there now) – I have really enjoyed reading your posts on your Chicago BlogHer Getaway. When you’ve lived in a place for a long time you tend to take so much for granted and/or forget about what it is that makes your town/city special – why others would want to travel to come see / experience it!

But this one really hit me with a flood of memories and awe how much it’s change – I don’t even recognize it!

A LONG time ago at age 18 I bravely moved to New York and went to NYU – lived just outside of the West Village (14th Street which was a dirty, somewhat dangerous dive at the time.) The 1st time I saw Time Square was as I emerged from the subway totally in awe and with no idea which way was which (thank goodness for the NUMBERED street names!)

Time Square too was like a rat’s nest: cheap peek shows, prostitutes, drug addicts – god knows what and utterly filthy. I went there often enough that this dirty, neglected, CROWDED crazy, half- mad, half-sad “place” was somehow “normal…”

After college, I left. I traveled a lot. Lived in Europe (mostly France and England) and even Alaska in a stint as a Travel Agent on the Pipeline – (hey single girls – here was a place with 100 guys for every girl! It’s not as nice as some might think ….)

Anyway, after sewing my wild oats, I moved back to NYC for a couple of years. Times and the City were changing, New York was just beginning to clean up it’s act. The last time I was there was in the late ’80. I KNOW I would not recognize it today. Back then Times Square was not an appropriate (or even safe place to bring the kids!)

Your post has brought back a flood of memories and a renewed longing to go back and visit my old haunts (if any are still there!) take in all the changes and show my Honey/Hubby around (he’s never been there.) And when you are showing someone around what is familiar to you – you see it with new eyes yourself.

I remember that I didn’t really get to know or see the wonders of NYC – until when friend’s visited and wanted to go to: Statue of Liberty, Staten Island Ferry, UN, Plaza Hotel, Public Library, Central Park, Empire State Building .. .

We’ve been talking about taking a long-weekend getway (it’s been a long time – last time we saw Boston – after winning the trip from an ESPN Radio Station Contest!) We’d been talking about DC, maybe Philly, the Southwest or Northwest. But New York City is emerging as a front runner in my mind at least. Thanks for sharing, Tesa!

  42. Jerry Lafferty says:

Crazy luck to not plan it and end up right there! I would love to go to Times Square someday. I would prefer the daytime myself, my nightime vision is poor and my photos seem to reflect my poor vision at night. But daytime, Bring it on!

  43. Yes, Times Square is a must if you get a chance to go to NY,NY. Next time you should definately see a broadway show and go to Rockefeller Center.

  44. Sky Sparkle says:

I’ve never been but would love to.

  49. judy gardner says:

i have never been there and dont know if i would like all of the hustle and bustle or not. i tend to like the calm and quiet country life, but it might fun for a short visit.

been there but do not like how close together everything is

  57. Rebecca Parsons says:

I have never been to New York but always wanted to just to go to Time Square. Yeah I know I’m a weirdo but still would love to do this. My brother said it’s great the first time you see it but there are so many people that it looses it’s thrill factor quick.

  72. Oh, what a wonderful memory your first time in Manhattan is! I moved to the New York metro area in the early 90’s after living all over North America. This is my favorite part of the U.S. and the city is absolutely amazing. I lived in Manhattan for a few years and got my fill of all the hustle and bustle. There’s really no other place like it.

Now? No thank you. I like my space, peace and quiet. I like cities that sleep.. LOL

  73. Tammy S says:

Part of my would love to go to New York and the other part of me is not sure how I would deal with the crowds. I would love to see some of the amazing sites though.

  80. Olivia Rubin says:

How did you like the smell? It’s funny growing up in NY and going to grad school there, I didn’t think much about passing this daily. But now that I live in South Florida, I realize how different NYC is from other cities. There is nothing in Miami like Times Square, and likely the same can be said for Ohio.
Glad you enjoyed it. Oh, how did you like the non-eye contact! Oh, I miss it now.

  84. Tammy S says:

As much as I would love to go to New York. I don’t know if I would do well around the big crowds. Sometimes when I am crowed places or spaces it tends to give me a panic attack. New ork is on our family wish list of places to go to. so someday I may find out.

  91. Jesselyn A/Jesstinger says:

Hi Tesa – Thanks for the trip down memory lane and the simultaneous jolt of revelations! I went too college at NYU and lived in NYC for eight years – before the Rudy Guiliani/ Mayor Bloomberg transformations (which are almost like Day and Night differences!)

It was fun remembering my times in NYC – back when Time Square was a dirty, rundown, tawdry taste of Gomorrah! I knew it had changed a lot – but I had no idea! Thanks for the sharing and the pics – Honestly I don’t even recognize the neighborhood where I used to work as a Travel Agent – passing by “Peep Show” shop and drunks urinating on doorways and lampposts! I can wait to revisit my old haunting grounds after it’s utter transformation!

  92. Nice :) doesn’t hurt to look around

  99. Oh YES–I have been to Times Square MANY times!! One of my clients was in a building in the area and I had to circumvent those crowds and the traffic twice each time!! It is awe inspiring! I even went there many years ago to see the ball drop. Actually I had been to a Theater performance with some friends -and when it was over–we walked out into the largest (friendliest) crowd you possibly could imagine. I do not go down to the city too much anymore-(I live 1/2 hour by train to Grand Central Station)-but would like to go as a tourist one of these days!

  100. I lived in NYC for many years! My favorite city to be in! There is so much to do!!! We avoid TIme Square bc of visitors but for any traveling, it is a must!

We have a great children’s book “Journey Around New York from A to Z” It has become sort of a reference guide for our family. We choose a location to get our day started & enjoy the adventure
