Cedar Point’s New 2013 Coaster: The Gatekeeper

It’s that time of year that we here in the Cleveland area start seeing commercials for Cedar Point. It always makes me happy because it means warmer days are ahead and it’s a great way to relive past park memories and check out what’s new for the upcoming year. That’s why I was really excited when I was watching tv recently and heard the familiar sound of roller coaster clicking and excited screams. I looked up to see a coaster barreling down the tracks and knew right away it was Cedar Point commercial season!

I stopped to watch the commercial and I’m so glad I did. While it showed many fun features of the amusement park, it focused heavily on this year’s new coaster – The Gatekeeper.

Have you heard about it? It’s a winged coaster which means you ride out on the “wings” of the coaster rather than on or under the track.

Cedar Point GatekeeperIt’s the longest winged coaster and has the longest winged coaster drop of any in the world.

GatekeeperIt’s been said that The Gatekeeper is going to change the landscape of Cedar Point. The track flies above the main entrance of the park passing over arriving guest. How fun is that?!

Gatekeeper OverviewI’ve been watching the progress of it being built and was very surprised to learn about the keyholes the coaster flies through. What an adrenaline rush that would be!

Gatekeeper KeyholeWhile I couldn’t find the exact commercial online yet, I did find this news report with similar footage and a great interview about the coaster’s features:

Having never been on a winged coaster before I love how she said it feels like you are flying. It sounds amazing! I know Dave can’t wait to ride The Gatekeeper this summer and I’d love to as well – I just have to build my courage up first!

What about you? Are you a thrill seeker? Would you ride The Gatekeeper?
