Family vacations can be the time many memories are made. However, they can also be a time of stress. Sometimes the stress involved with planning family vacations can overshadow the fun in store. With the help of technology, there are many ways to plan your vacation in a stress-free way.

Family Vacation BeachBy following these five tips of vacation planning, you can be prepared when you arrive on your vacation and visit all the places you want to see – even those that may be busy. Planning ahead will allow you to spend your vacation relaxing, enjoying yourself and building memories.

Determine Your Vacationing Style

Is your family’s vacationing style relaxing, activity driven or a combination of both? If your family is interested in relaxation, be sure to book a hotel with a great pool and place to spend time relaxing and spending time with each other. If you are interested in activities, schedule one right after another, plan them ahead of time. Schedule activities, purchase tickets and perhaps write an itinerary so you don’t get bored.

Plan Activities for All Ages

When you are traveling with a family, you have multiple ages and multiple personalities to entertain. Discuss with all family members activities they want to do on the vacation. Try to find activities that will appease as many family members as possible. When traveling with adults and children, plan activities for each separate age group as well as activities for both groups.

Make Reservations

Scheduling activities in advance will make your vacation run smoothly. Book hotels, rental cars, tickets to shows, reservations at busy restaurants, golf tee times and any other activities you know you want to do. If you want to go to any places that are potentially busy, planning ahead will ensure you are able to go. Make a plan in advance for every day of your vacation.

Make a Shopping and Packing List

When traveling with a family, you often feel like you are packing your entire house. But, it is important, especially with little kids, to be equipped with all the essentials when you arrive at your hotel. Make a list of things you need to buy before leaving on vacation. Also, make a list of things that each child has to pack. This will guarantee you are fully stocked when you arrive, and this can also help children to pack their own bags.

Be Flexible

After you have all reservations and plans made, you must promise yourself you will be flexible. When traveling with children, you have to be okay with plans changing. If kids are tired and not feeling up to the activity you planned for the evening, skip it. Do everything you can to keep all family members happy and comfortable.

  1. You always have so many great tips! Thank you!

  2. Heather Hayes Panjon says:

    Great Tips !:)

  3. Plan your vacation well in advance. This gives you plenty of time to surf the internet and get the best bargains on air tickets and hotel reservations for your family. As you are going with your family it is necessary that before you leave for your vacation, buy all your own amenities like sunscreen, toothpaste, medicines, etc. These things usually cost more at vacation spots.

  4. Christopher Williams says:

Yeah, normally when we go places either the adults are bored and the kids are happy or it’s the other way around.

  5. Stephanie says:

    good advice :)

  9. Your tip about vacationing style is a good one. When I was a kid, my parents always wanted to relax on family vacations, and my brother and I wanted to do stuff! Kids aren’t necessarily interested in relaxing at say, a golf resort or a secluded beach.

  10. Good tips. Also important to do some Internet research for deals and to check out others reviews

  11. Thanks for all the great tips!

  12. Flexibility is key. Kids can get overwhelmed traveling and so build in some down time and don’t stress on hitting everything on your to-do list.

  13. Sarah Hirsch says:

good advice – we will keep this on mind when planning our summer vacation!

i never thought about determining vacations style but this would lead to a happier vacation

  16. Thanks guys.. Personally my biggest thing with vacationing is I hate feeling like I’m more tired on my vacation than I was before I left. It’s supposed to be a time to relax and when it turns into too much running around it almost takes the fun out of it. I’m only willing to run around a ton for a few vacation spots (New York, Paris, and maybe a few other places in Europe). I hope all of you figure that into your plans when going on vacation…. Thanks again for reading:)

  17. Not only make a packing list, but save it on your computer. Why reinvent the wheel every vacation?

  18. jeevon kay says:

great tips. This would be useful as the next trip would be the first trip with my baby. So, I’ll make sure to follow that the next time I go on vacation.
